Johan “Gellies” Geldenhuys over the weekend of the 8th & 9th of June 2019 made history at Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate.
Gellies became the first Limpopo player to win our Limpopo Mid-Am Open Championship sponsored by Sterling Access. Gellies deserved the win with his consistant golf over the whole weekend.
Round one was an eye opener for most players as the greens were running at around 14 on the stimp meter and 3 putting was a common occurrence. Beyers Smith came in as the leader after round 1 with a 1 under par round as the only player to break par on day 1. Gellies shot level par with defending champ Derek Schullard on 1 over par. Gellies only made one birdie and one bogey for his round of 72.
Day 2 seemed like the players got a bit more comfortable with the greens as scores were a bit better. Stewart Chitambo, Derek Schullard and Johan Geldenhuys shot the tournament low scores with 2 under par scores of 70. But the match between Gellies and Schully was alot closer than what the scoreboard shows. Gellies made birdie on 15 but followed that up with a bogey on 16 which opened the door for Schully again. On a very tough 17 Gellies made a great putt for par to stay 1 ahead. The 18th played fairly easy with the tee-markers forward so birdie was on the cards, Schully attacked the pin for 2 and hit it over the green with Gellies hitting a great approach to middle green for 2. Schully almost caused the upset when his chipshot back lipped the hole and he made birdie giving Gellies a 2 putt for the win.
We as the Limpopo Province are very proud of Gellies and it is great to see someone who loves the game so much back and playing well.
On behalf of Limpopo Golf Union WELL DONE GELLIES!!!!!!
