51 player came through to play in the 2017 edition of the Mogol Open. This tournament boasts with names of past winners who are playing on the professional scene currently and thus is respected as one of the tougher tournaments to play.
2017 was no exception, the greens was running fast and the summer felt like it came to visit a bit earlier than it should. The players felt hot and dehydrated on the golf course and was all to glad to come into the clubhouse after 9 holes to fill up on drinks.
Local boy Gerhard Pepler was back to defend his title, but the competition was tough and they wanted to take the title away from him. After 9 holes it was the Junior from Zebula Golf Estate and Tukkies HPC Golf Academy Francois J/v Rensburg who was in the lead with 3 birdies but added 2 drop shots to turn in -1 (35). He could not keep it going and it was Peter Masehela from Polokwane Golf Club who surprised everyone with the 18 hole lead on 1 under par (71). Our defending Champion finished with level par 72. All was to play for on the last 18 with a lot of players still in the running.
One by one the players faded away on a very tough and hot afternoon. Peter Masehela first started dropping away with a third 9 of 41. Francois J/v Rensburg and Barend Gerber from Thabazimbi Golf Club could just not get the puts to fall to put any pressure on Gerhard. Gerhard went quitly around the course with a level round of 72 and definitely showed more maturity than the previous year where he almost lost the tournament on the last hole.
Vincent Olley from Naboomspruit Golf Club faught hard on the final round with a 1 under par (35) to close with a total of 4 over par 147, but it was all in vain as Gerhard kept his composure and finished with a total of 1 over par 145.
Gerhard is currently the number 1 Junior and SAGDB player in Limpopo and was again selected for the Limpopo Inter Provincial Team. We wish Gerhard well together with the Provincial Team at Bryanston Country Club in September
