Hans Merensky Open 2017

June 26, 2017

This weekend saw the 3rd edition of the Hans Merensky Open after its absence for numerous years, and the players were treated to a lovely event.

Celebrating their 50th birthday this year Hans Merensky went all out.

Firstly the first 50 visiting entrants each received a room for free at the Hans Merensky Hotel and Spa and this got everyone interested. The Estate together with the Golf Club committee did wonderful effort to make sure the players was treated to a special affair.

Round 1 saw some old faces making a charge. Niko Koster shot a 75 to lead in the clubhouse most of the day but it was Franco Putter who kicked him off with a well played 74 after an eagle at the par 5 16th. He unfortunately gave a shot back on the 18th.

Neil Rathman who started his round with a 42 (+6) came back with a brilliant 34 (-2) to be just 2 back.

Saturday night with the rugby there was a braai and everyone had way to much to eat. The braai obviously tasted better after the springboks win.

Round 2 started early and Malebana Pataki, local junior Janus van Rooyen together with Jannie Bronkhorst came in with lowest rounds of 36. The race was one with Franco Putter turning in 38. One by one the players came in but when Franco made birdie on 16 again to put him -3 on that hole for the weekend it was basically all over.

Franco won the Hans Merensky Open on +3 on a very tough track with the whole Limpopo Mid-Am team almost chasing him. Franco showed his strength and his composure.

“This is something we are very proud of and Franco has proved himself as a “terrier” on numerous occasions for Limpopo at IPT and Country Districts. We are happy Franco is in-form going into Limpopo Open” says Jan Nel

This Open was run professionally and organised to the tee. Well done and good luck.

To Franco we hope there is many more to come
