Greetings to all our members at all the various clubs in the Limpopo Province. We as the Limpopo Golf Union Executive wish everyone a prosperous 2020 and may every golf club grow from strength to strength. We wish for every golfer that has stopped playing to pick up their clubs again, every person thinking about golf to meet a friend that plays, every parent that plays to introduce their kids and every golfer in this province to have the time of their lives on our golf courses in the Limpopo Province. This is a game for the family, for business and for friends. It is a social game but also a competitive game for all ages at all levels. If ever you were thinking of what to start doing in 2020, well go to your local golf club and talk to the members and find out what a great community they are. Just don’t be the stereotype…

From the President’s Desk

Happy New Year from our Executive Committee. 2020 is the start of 5 big years for Limpopo Golf Union and we are looking forward to raising the bar in local, national and IPT events hosted in our province.

We have 3 big objectives for 2020

1. To Grow golf in Limpopo
2. Give back to our members
3. To win the 2020 Mid-Am IPT that we are hosting at Elements in October

I would like to also take this opportunity to thank every club for your support in 2019 and we look forward to working with every club and its members in Limpopo during 2020!

Please feel free to contact me with any advice queries or assistance needed and a Golf Invite here and there in 2020 is always welcome. May your club be blessed in 2020 I look forward to seeing you all on our Bushveld fairways.

Toshiba is back on board for the fourth year running

Toshiba Limpopo has assisted the Limpopo golfers with sponsoring the Limpopo Golf Union yearly ranking system. Set-up in a Fed-Ex-Cup style format points system. Helping every club hosting a club open every year to achieve maximum entries. Over 300 different golfers play in the Toshiba Cup every year and we are grateful for the sponsorship of Toshiba Limpopo who is assisting every club to showcase themselves at their various open tournaments every year.

Nett League News

Winning Team 2019 – Polokwane Golf Club 2

A big congratulations have to go out to the 4 teams who played in the final weekend of the Nett League 2019. It was a very closely contested weekend to sign off a record year for the Limpopo Nett League with 24 teams taking part. But Polokwane 2, Polokwane Albetrosse, Kameeldoring 1 and Tzaneen 2 shined at the end.

2020 is guaranteed to be bigger and better with 20 teams already entered and more new teams joining. Welcome to Amandelbult Golf Club, Thabazimbi Golf Club and Marble Hall Golf Club.

De Wet Kruger – Vice President of Limpopo Golf Union from Kameeldoring Golf Club will oversee the Nett League this year. The League will start in February and not in January as stated before.

Scratch League

Winning Team 2019 – Polokwane Golf Clubs’ Grey Impala’s

Jannie Bronkhorst, Neil Rathmann, Vincent Olley, Tristen Schwim and in his absence Johan “Gellies” Geldenhuys crowned as Limpopo Scratch League Champions 2019 with Kameeldoring finishing 2nd.

Limpopo form part of the old transvaal unions that play scratch league against one another every year. Gauteng North, Central Gauteng, North West, Ekurhuleni, Mpumalanga and ourselves -now known as Northern Provinces- host and play on a rotational basis. This year Mpumalanga will host the Northern Provinces Scratch League Finals at Highland Gate and proves to be a great 2 days of golf. 

Limpopo being a small club asked the permission of the Northern Provinces Union’s to allow us to putt 2 clubs together to form a team of 8 to compete as our clubs are to small to field a team of 8. Polokwane Golf Club and Kameeldoring in the past was the 2 clubs that were most likely to compete and we wanted to open up the format for all the clubs. Thus our new format was developed.

Scratch League in Limpopo is now made up of 4 players in a team and the 2 teams that finished 1st and 2nd will be amalgamated to make a team of 8 to compete at the Northern Provinces Scratch League Finals. This assists clubs with the costs and allows the smaller club to enter teams also.

2019 entries were, Drakensig, Hans Merensky, Polokwane had 2 teams, Kameeldoring, Chrome and Polokwane finished third eventually out of the 6 provinces represented.

Polokwane and Kameedoring joined forces to compete at the yearly Northern Provinces Scratch League Final that was hosted at Silver lakes Golf Club and we ultimately finished 3rd overall.

The Scratch League 2020 entry forms has been sent out to all clubs to enter their teams. Already have a few entries so lets make it big.

Limpopo Golf Union will be sending the following teams to GolfRSA Inter-Provincial Team Tournaments this year.

• Country Districts to be played at Katberg Hotel & Eco Golf Estate near Fort Beaufort, Eastern Cape 11 – 15 May 2020
• Mid-Amateur to be played at Elements Private Golf Reserve 5 – 9 October 2020 in LIMPOPO
• Juniors to be played at Sishen Golf Club 7 – 11 December 2020
